UV-C light is the shortest wavelength of light created by our friend, the Sun. This light never naturally reaches the Earth as our atmosphere protects us from this wavelength of light. We create this light artificially to sanitize and disinfect items. UV-C has been used for years to disinfect.

This article explains in detail how UV-C can affect bacteria and other germs without harming us. Our skin can’t absorb the wavelengths under normal conditions. Germs are smaller than our cells, so the microbes under the light are disrupted and killed, while our skin cells are not. These organisms are extremely small, and our cells are much bigger. This is how when we’re exposed to UV-C, it doesn’t harm us like it does the microbes.
UV-C light effectively destroys nucleic acids and breaks apart bacteria DNA. With their DNA broken, bacteria can’t function or reproduce, and the organisms die.
UV-C can cause temporary blindness or a slight sunburn-like effect like any light with prolonged exposure. Our units can have some light shining out of the sides; just know that this won’t hurt you.
